You gotta love green

Spring has officially arrived in my yard - everything has turned green overnight!  It’s amazing what 9” of rain and 75 degree weather will do, isn’t it?  Is it just me or is it a bit early this year?  Here in RI I don’t remember having buds on this apple tree quite so early before - not that I’m complaining, mind you.

Really, a couple of days ago this was just a raging brook in my backyard and today it’s filled with daffodils in bloom and skunk cabbage (though I have yet to see any skunks in my neighborhood, at least not the four legged kind!).  I’m tempted to cut the flowers and bring them into the house, but I’d have to put on hip boots to get to them, as this part of the backyard is still pretty squishy from the floods last week.

This past weekend I noticed some activity in the condo complex we put up for the birds last spring.  Lots of noisy chirping from some resident sparrows setting up house - I think they like the condo with the water view the best.

I’ll have to start filling up the bird feeders a bit more regularly now I guess, just to help the expecting parents bulk up and get ready for the new arrivals.  It’s amazing how loud these birds are in the morning, but I’m not going to complain about waking up to bird chatter as opposed to the garbage truck.  Since it’s supposed to go down to only 50 tonight, I guess I’ll leave my windows cracked so that I can really enjoy the racket in the morning.

Next week the landscaper comes and starts to clean up all the flower beds, so I guess it really is officially spring (along with the spring bills!).  Still, it’s a real treat to step outside in the morning, still in a coma, and get into the car for the drive into work and then take a moment to notice all the new greenery.  Pretty soon it will be time to stop and smell the flowers….stay tuned.
